Run out of options to tether RFing?

How vital is it to use the tether in the RFing position? I just switched my 9 month old son to a Britax Boulevard 70 G3. The manual recommends using the tether while RFing. I have a 2011 Nissan Rouge, and the tether anchor is in the trunk. I tried installing using the Australian style of tethering over the top of the seat and into the trunk, but my son is tall for his age, and pretty ingenious at getting to things, and if he really stretches, he can grab it and yank. That seems pretty unsafe! So I tried the Swedish method with the D Ring. But, the seat tracks on the front seats are built in such a way that the seat needs to be pulled as far forward as it goes to anchor the D Ring properly, so now only someone very short or willing to be very uncomfortable can ride in the passenger seat. My husband is neither of those things. I feel like I've exhausted all of my options to tether this seat! So, what I really want to know is, is it alright to NOT use the tether, and if I absolutely need to use it, is there another option that I have not found? Thanks so much!!

It's perfectly safe to not use it.

If your son is super tall, just check that the seat will get you rear facing as long as you want. It goes rear facing until 1" of shell is left above the head. Not the headrest, the shell. So it's not terribly tall.
