Who goes in front?

My sister is coming to visit me. She will be driving her husbands pickup truck to haul some chairs I'm giving her home. The problem is, she has four kids. She has zero issue with kids in the front seat, she isn't exactly known for best practice (or even legal limit practice ). If I tell her which kid to put up front though, she'll listen. She has a 10yo in a Literider, 6yo in a HBTB, 5yo in a HBTB, and a 2yo FF in either a classic Marathon or Nautilus. She will assume the child to go in the front is oldest nephew. I would assume it's oldest child still harnessed, but that's the 2yo (who should still be RF). The 5yo *might* fit in the Nautilus, but it would be close.

Who should I tell her to put up front?

I'd put the oldest kid in a booster up front without a second thought. I don't buy that "oldest kid in a FF harness" business at all. Assuming there are no lower LATCH anchors or tether anchor for the front passenger seat position, I would NOT recommend installing a FF untethered harnessed CR in a seating position with an active frontal airbag in front of it. Especially when you consider that you will be using a seatbelt that probably has a load limiter on it to install that harnessed seat. What's going to happen when that load limiter spools out 6+" of webbing during the crash because it's trying to help the front seat occupant "ride down" the crash?

The front passenger seat restraint system was carefully designed to optimally protect an adult occupant. Everything from the pretensioner to the load limiter to the airbag(s) were designed and engineered to protect someone the size (and position) of an adult occupant. A 10 year old in a booster is going to allow the restraint system in the front seat to operate the way it was intended and provide optimal crash protection.

Just my :twocents:
