Belt Cutters Revisited

I know this isn't the first time this topic has been done...

But has anybody seen this particular belt-cutting, glass-breaking tool?

ExitTool clips to the seat belt so you can find it in case of emergency. And there's a demo video which is pretty impressive. Especially since I've tested my own Smith & Wesson emergency knife on recycled car seat straps only to find that the belt cutter tool does not work at all (the knife still works).

What do you think?

I have not seen that one.

However I have the Lifehammer in both of my vehicles, it smashes windows and cuts belts. I had to cut a D-ring strap once and it sliced through it like butter :)

Britax used to hand out belt cutters at conferences. I have them in my cars. Maybe I should try one on an old harness instead of assuming it will work if I ever need it, huh? D'oh!

Yes, I would strongly recommend that! You don't want to find out it doesn't work when you're in a situation that's dire enough that you're using it. I was very frustrated to find out that my emergency knife didn't work as a belt cutter, but very glad I found out ahead of time.

I have a Britax one that I used to cut wrapping paper in a stop-at-Target-for-a-gift-right-before-the-party "emergency." It didn't work well and got all gummed up. Granted, maybe it would have worked better on an actual seatbelt, but it didn't instill a lot of confidence.

I tried to use my hammer one in just this same scenario once. It wouldn't work at all on the paper. I tested it on some straps at a check event and it worked beautifully.

I loved my houdini auto escape tool but the tab holding the cover over the cutter got bent and it wouldn't stay on so I replaced it with a multitool thing I got on ebay that breaks windows, cuts belts and can act as a flashlight or flare. I don't know how I'd feel attaching something to my seatbelt. Maybe I'm being overly paranoid. :/

I'm not too keen on the idea of something attached to my seat belt either, except that I've been trying to figure out any other good spot in the car and haven't come up with anything perfect. If I'm hanging upside down (been there, done that), opening the center console is going to make a big mess. Anyplace else in my car, and there's a risk I won't be able to reach it or that it will go flying and I won't even be able to find it.

I have my tool on my keys so it would be right there if needed.

This is the one I have:

I have never gotten a chance to try it so I hope it works. Do your keys usually stay in the ignition if your car rolls over?

Cool!

Do you think you can check to see whether it works on an old harness or LATCH strap at some point? If it works, I might buy one.

I have this too. And typically yes, they'd stay in the ignition. It would take some interesting physics to get them out, especially considering most cars now require you to push in and turn to get them out.

I can remove my keys with the ignition in any position (even while the vehicle is running). I don't think I am supposed to be able to, but...
