Question Best options for tall children

I have twins that will be 4 in June. They are nowhere near 40 lbs and my plan was to keep them in a 5 pt harness as long as possible. In one car, we have Graco MyRide 65's which they still fit in perfectly, so my plan is to use them until they grow out of them. The other car, however, has Eddie Bauer 3 in 1 car seats, and my kids are getting too tall for the harness. With my daughter, I cannot even pull the straps out to give her room to get in the seat because it is stretched to the height limit. I know these seats can be used as a belt-positioning booster, but with their age and weight I am not ready to switch to this. Are there boosters with a 5-pt harness that would be safe for them, or do I need to buy another set of convertible car seats to bridge the gap?

Hi there, great question!

The seats you have right now don't make good boosters. The belt fit is poor, and when that happens it can lead to increased chances of injury or death. So even if they were big enough and old enough, the seats you have would not be recommended. They're on the IIHS not recommended list and have been for years (and are now the only ones still on there).

I'd look for them at the Harmony Defender, Evenflo SecureKid, Graco Nautilus, Graco Argos, Recaro ProSport, and Britax Frontier. All of those are combination seats. Harness to booster. They work well as both harnessed seats and boosters, and range from $100 to $280.

I agree with everything Wendy said but want to add one more option. The Evenflo Sureride is a convertible seat but has the second highest harness slots on the market (second to the Britax Frontier) and can be found for under $100 often as low as $80.

I also agree. My favorite seat out of the ones Wendy listed is the ProSport, its a great seat & makes a nice booster for later.
