Have him try this. Install your carseat with LATCH or a locking clip or lockoffs (whatever seat you have, I didn't check). Then without loosening or tightening the belt/LATCH, undo it a bit and remove the mat. Then click it back in and see how much looser it is. If it's still within the 1" it's safe. Otherwise, no.

My guess is that this will add several inches of movement.

A thin sheet, receiving blanket, or towel is perfectly safe.

I really, really despise working with that particular product. It's bulky, bunchy, and just plain irritating when you're trying to install a car seat. If there is any way you can skip it, I absolutely would. I haven't done the test Wendy suggested, but it wouldn't surprise me if you did end up with a false install with the product in place.

Honestly, it's just the most annoying product ever.

Thanks. He went out and tried it last night and it was way too small for the back seat and he didn't like it.

I told him we could use a receiving blanket or a towel and he was OK with that. He is just excited about his "new to him" car and doesn't want the car seats to mess up his leather seats.

Thanks again!

I have had many car seats installed on my leather seats forever and they have never been damaged by seats, the dents just pop out after a bit.
