Yesterday we went to the open house for DDs special education preschool. She doesn't start until the 17th but it gave her a chance to see the place. We'll be going back tomorrow for an hour when they'll try to get some structured time in. The good news is she likes it. The bad news...she was the only kid in a harnessed car seat. From what I could see at least, and the parking lot was PACKED. The (pricey) daycare next door had parents day so there were all these huge SUVs with boosters or nothing at all in them. Her class is 2-3 year olds. When we were walking out a grandma was just ahead of us. Her GS couldn't walk without help and when she spent so much time getting him in the car I thought for sure she was buckling him into something. But when she drove past us I could see he wasn't in ANYTHING. She sort of had him propped up with cushions on the side. He wasn't older than 3, and I'd be shocked if he was over 35 lbs. What can/should I do? I'd love to make something I could hand out that explains laws and how dangerous it is. Unfortunately MI law is only 4 yrs/40 lbs right now but hopefully the 8yrs/80lbs law will pass soon. I'm thinking it has to be heavy on scary statistics since seats aren't even being used. I'll put in something about ERF and when it's safe to use a booster (for these kids, not for years if ever). Since these kids are covered even by our crappy laws I'll include the MI laws. These parents already have so much to deal with I don't want it to be too dramatic but if seats aren't even being used...come on. Any suggestions as to what I should include?
