Question Three side by side? Safety.

As far as I know, there haven't been any formal studies of these situations. But what I do know is that if a child is in a properly used car seat, then he/she is going to be FAR safer than the majority of children on the road.

If you were to just look at the data comparing 3 kids in a sedan (for example) that are all in one row compared to 3 kids spread out in 2 rows of an SUV or minivan, then you really couldn't draw any conclusions because of the differences between vehicle types. I suppose if you compared 3 across in a specific year/make/model of minivan vs 3 spread out in that same minivan then maybe you would have a better basis for comparison, though even then you'd want to be sure you're only comparing similar crash situations... and by the time you're doing all that, there's probably not enough real-life data to actually do anything with.

A 3 across scenario is perfectly safe as long as the three seats are installed correctly, and are independently tight (not leaning on each other or seeming tight because they're wedged together but in reality loose).

What van does she drive? Any idea what seats she has?

With 3 under 3 I would take out the middle row too. Sure they may fight in the car, but with all that space in the middle I could keep all three safely wrangled inside with the doors closed during the 758375198 in/out/diaper change/ jacket putting ons and whatnot 3 littles require instead of chasing stroller escapees through the streets.

A friend with 3 3 and under has 3 Radians across the back of her van for her older 2 kids and her nephew and then her niece is in a booster in a captain's chair and her youngest is in an infant seat in a captain's chair.

That at least makes sense for carpooling purposes.
