sorry, this is going to be long, I"m frustrated.
we are a 1 car family, always have been, but with the kids getting older and schedules getting busier we're finding we really "need" 2 cars. DS is being taken to school by MIL and it's costing us $80-120 a month in gas, and his school is only 6 miles away (her van is a gas hog), and next year his new school will be 12 miles away, so I can only imagine what that will cost in gas (bus ride now is 1hr, next year will be 1hr 20min, each way, not happening).DD will be starting kindergarten, not to mention DH has to work all day then we have to do all our "running around" in the evening,so he doesn't get a break.
We have a 2004 malibu that we love, we've had it for 7 years with no problems, but have put nearly $5000 into it in the last 6 months or so.
Anyway, DH was approved for a car loan, but our budget is tight (I"m a SAHM), so we'd really not like to spend more than we have too. He found a nice 2002 chevy cavalier, 51,000 miles, for $5800. The monthly payment would only be about $110-120, which we can do, and still be able to put food on the table.
That's what we pay MIL just in gas money to take DS to school, so even though we have to consider gas, and car insurance it may be worth it. DH has worked on these Cavaliers his whole life and can take it apart and put it back together blindfolded, so that helps with maintenance costs.
I just wish we could afford something newer, with better safety features and less risk of things going wrong.
I was in a wreck in a 2002 cavalier, a friend was driving, lost control of the car, crossed both lanes of traffic going the same way, crossed the grass highway divider, both lanes of oncoming traffic, hit another car, and then slammed front end first into a ditch. we walked away with not even a bruise. So that helps me feel a little better about it
I have 2 kids, I would move their seats to the cavalier, we have a vivo and nauti, and I have my niece 3 days a week, so I need to be able to do 3 across. Is it possible in this car with my current seats? I can get a narrow convertible for my niece, but still don't think 3 will fit with the nauti. I don't know. Should I just get a second set of seats for this car?
I just don't know. What are your thoughts on this car? Do you think it's worth getting another car vs. continuing to pay MIL to drive DS?
