My husband and I are looking to replace our 2001 Saab 9-5 Wagon. It is our 2nd vehicle and never have used it to transport all of our children together. In doing research, I discovered the videos on seat back failure. It was alarming to say the least. Our primary vehicle is a 2000 Honda Odyssey. Although, it is a small percentage of traffic accidents, the results of seat back failure are devastating and I did see several cases of them failing in low speed accidents. I have also seen reports of seat back failure in both the Odyssey and Sienna even models as new as 3 yrs old. Now I'm thinking that I would like to replace both vehicles. I can't seem to access stats on seat back failure by make although it looks like all American and Asian cars have this issue. The advice that seems to be consistent is to buy a European vehicle or a very large SUV which greatly limits our options on a less than $7000. I'm considering another Saab which are very inexpensive now and we know what to expect with them. Other things I was considering is a Mercedes M SUV or E Class wagon, Volvo wagon, or something like a Suburban. I'm seeking input on 2 issues.
1. Does anyone know of resources to further study seat back failure and what vehicles either by make or size that are safe?
2. If we get into a 3 across situation in something like a Saab or Mercedes what plays well together? Our children as follows:
DD almost 4 1/2, 40 in, and 34 lbs. FF in 3rd row of Odyssey currently and rides in a Britax 55 (almost outgrown probably less than 6 mo to use) She has used a Nautilus in the past but we returned for head slump. This really bugged me.
DS just turned 3, 39 in, and 34lbs. FF in 3rd row of Odyssey currently and rides in a Britax 55. I'm estimating he may have another yr in that seat.
DD 11 mo and almost 20 lbs. Not sure of her current length but on the high end of the growth chart for age. RF in 2nd row passenger side of Odyssey in a previous generation Britax Roundabout. Seat will expire in 1 yr.
Sorry for the long post but I'm very confused about which way to go. I love the convenience of a van except for the safety issues.
