I read on a web site that if a car is in an accident the
car seat should not be used. Even if the car seat was unoccupied at the time of the crash.

The insurance company does not want to reimburse for this
I am reluctant to use the same seat
yaou just don't know

The recommendation varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. You should contact the company who made YOUR seat (we can give you the contact info if you post the brand), and ask them. If they say to replace it, ask them to mail or fax you a letter to show the insurance company. Most insurance adjusters won't fight it if you have a letter from the car seat company.
