BRU advertising free installation in some areas

Yikes

I read that line as "Our CPST will install it for you". Like a dumb play on the "R" thing. But seriously...every time I go into a BRU the person working in the car seat/stroller department pretty much has no freaking idea what they're talking about. I can't imagine them having actual CPST trained employees??

Maybe. I live in one of the states and haven't heard anything.

Someone should call and ask.

Interesting. I know we've trained some BRU staff in our area, but they don't/can't install at work for liability reasons.

Considering the guy that "helped' me when DD was only 11months(I was buying her symphony to keep her RF) told me I could turn her FF, it would have to be a CPST or I would not even listen much less let them touch the installation!

The guy in the car seat dept at BRU that I talked to thought I was looking for a FF seat for my tiny 11 month old. I told him that he was only 11 months old, 17 lbs and would be RF for a long time and he just said "oh". When I asked him about the AAP recommendation, he told me that they tell parents that it depends on the child. If a child is bigger, he doesn't need to RF as long . I dont know if he is a CPST or not, but even if he was there is no way I'd let him try to install my sons seat.
I saw that sign at my BRU too. I know our state has a lot of CPSTs so I really hope that whoever is doing installs is a real, knowledgable tech. It also bugged me that the sign said that they will install the seat for you. Is the person just going to be installing, or teaching parents how to do it themselves?

It'll be real techs. And an attempt was made to have " education", rather than "installation" be on the advertising, but the powers that be decided to say installation. Oh well. Hopefully it will improve the overall knowledge of associates, and good techs will educate. :)

The official training from BRU definitely says RF to 2. Unfortunately, the employee turnover rate is so high, and the training is so minimal (they gave me a booklet, last year, and the new people haven't gotten it since then...), that the advice is still no better than the old wives' tales you can hear from anyone on the street. (The parking lot of my BRU often has RF convertibles, lots of top tethers in use, etc...but the employee section, no matter how much I try to teach my coworkers, has such horrors as RF Nautiluses without headrests. Sigh).

Will the CPSTs so help the parents CHOOSE the seats? Because I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to have to install a Nautilus for the parents who were just talked into it for their 12-month-old.

This.

It would be nice if they could only install recommended setups. I'm sure the education the new techs got will have varied, as well, though, and some will be more gung ho about rear facing than others. And if a store is now representing itself as a safety resource, advice should only be given by the techs, or read straight from the booklet.

Can you imagine if a customer was just told that their kid will break their legs if they touch the seat, they buy a Frontier and now the tech from the same store has to tell them the opposite?

Yup. It's a pilot program that is starting off in CA, CO & FL. These stores have certified CPS Techs on staff that will help consumers to install a seat that was purchased at that store.

I'm in CO and I did a check at the hospital for a parent who had their seat installed at BRU. I had asked if it was installed or if they taught how to install, he didn't know because his wife had gone. The seat was installed correctly, maybe a tad over tightened, still I went over how to install with all systems present and how to put baby in the seat correctly. And I informed them that even though BRU sold them the bundle me and harness covers and head supports they shouldn't use them.

The very same thing happened to me when I took my daughter at the same age and size!! He tried to tell me a state trooper had taught them that if their legs were going up the vehicle seat you could turn them FF!:thumbsdown:
