So, are the SUVs that are equipped with side curtain airbags safe for children? What happens if the airbag deploys onto a child?

THey shouldn't....if they are like the airbags in my 2004 SIenna they should deploy down along the window....not onto your child
Side airbags are generally not considered a risk to properly restrained adults or children. Also:
