Am I over-tightening the harness?

I have read about so many of you who seem to never loosen or tighten the harness straps. I have tried this with the seats we have owned and can't ever make it work. It never feels tight enough to me, but maybe I am tightening too much? I have seen pictures of the pinch test, is there a video of it somewhere I could check out? Any other tips I can try to know if it is too tight or too loose?

Thanks!

The way I make sure that it's not to tight is, I tighten it and then pull up on the release lever and let the natural slack into it. That way I know it's not too tight and he can breath comfortably.

I like to loosen when I take the kiddo out and tight when putting him in. The Radian gave me issues, and eventually I gave up, left it tightened and Matthew started putting the harness on himself, and eventually buckled himself up too. He can always manage to get himself in there. He wears no coat at all though. He insists.:)

I rarely loosen harnesses. With seats without a continuous harness, I get their shoulder in the strap then pull the arm through by pulling the upper arm. Does that make any sense? I don't put their hand through first.
