That had to have been absolutely terrifying for both of them. I'm so glad they were able to cut the belt in time.

Reminds me that I should probably have something to cut seat belts with in my car.

How scary! We draw names for Christmas in my husbands family. My SIL keeps asking what we need for Christmas and I had no idea. I was able to tell her we need a seatbelt cutter for Christmas.

Someone posted this on facebook a little while ago. I read it more as a "why you shouldn't leave kids unsupervised in the car" story vs a "bring something to cut seatbelt with" story.

Yes, its a good idea to bring something to cut the seatbelt, but if the kid wasn't alone in the first place, it wouldn't be needed. Also, it was luck that she got there in time. A short while later and it could have been too late even to cut the belt, so again, preventable in the first place by not leaving a young kid in the car.

So glad her daughter is okay. I can't even imagine how horrible that was for her to go through, watching her daughter be strangled right before her eyes!

I keep a pair of scissors in my glove box but it was more so I could have them to cut coupons or all of the other little things I often come across where scissors would come in handy. I also have a seatbelt cutter. It was part of some multi-use tool I got a long time ago. I think it has a tire gauge as well! I hope I never have to use it for something like this!

i put a cutter-window breaker combo on my wishlist for few years with the exact model number, but no one ever got it for me... so, i finally ended up buying my own. i hope you get yours!

i can see that. personally, i don't think a five year old alone in a van few feet away for a few minutes is that unreasonable of a situation. besides, most people don't even realize the potential danger of locking retractable seat belts, so leaving a child in a van like that probably doesn't seem that dangerous in the first place.

thank goodness that they're able to inform others with a happy-but-still-traumatic outcome... i'm reminded that we're all just one terrible accident away from tragedy.
