What to do with certification?

Hi all,

I'm employed by a local PD in our traffic division and handle all phone calls related to car seats along with install appointments. Both the officers in my division and myself feel it would benefit the department for me to be certified but they have so far refused to allow me to take the class citing 'union' issues. I'm considering taking the class on my own but I'm wondering...what do I do with the cert once I have it? Those of you who aren't police officers, etc...how do you get hooked up with car seat checks, roadside checks, etc. Do you get on a list with Safe Kids? Would love some info! Thanks!

You get connected with your local SafeKids and that's generally the gateway to all the activities and continuing education.

Yep go through safe kids, my dh is a officer for our county, very very rual area, we don't have a traffic devision! LOL Our town has done 1 seat check in all the years iv'e lived here (my whole live) with PD envolved and that was only doen to inform parents of the new booster seat law that happend 2 years ago.
I have done all my seat checks through state farm and through safe kids linked check points.

First off, I would attend the next Union meeting and find out who to speak to about the issue. If you are doing checks without being trained, your PD could get seriously sued. If you bring this up, you may be able to get your work to pay for the class.

I don't do installs, although I do occasionally help the officers when one of them is out and we have alot of seats. But I never do them alone.

Thanks for the input. I've spoken with someone in CT Safekids and I'm keeping my eyes open for a class. In the meantime, I'll keep working on my admin to agree to pay/send me. I found out from the woman at Safekids that another local town is willing to pay to certify anyone in the department (civilian and sworn, explorers, dispatchers) if they're willing to become certified since they feel so strongly that they need to have CPSTs available to the public. So I'm going to get in touch with them and see how they've gotten around the 'union' issue.
