I have a friend who occasionally has need to have a full van in her sienna. The middle seat, middle row has a weird small seat that her 6 1/2 yo 5 steps well in. No seats, harnessed or booster, fit in that seat. Laws aside, how would you feel about letting him sit there?

If you search, you will find many threads on that "8th seat". If it is a new 2012, then the bubblebum and topside backless booster DO work there, and that's what I would use if I needed to. If it's an older 2011 or less Sienna, there are actually harnessed seats that fit. (for some odd reason, they made the center seat smaller on the new version of the van) as well as some boosters. Luckily the topside is amongst the cheapest boosters out there, so cost shouldn't be an issue. :)

Thanks for that. I don't know if it's using the app or if I'm jut off my search skills lately.

Remember, even if the belt fits ok, he still has a 6 yo's skeleton. I would definitely use a booster.

Agreed. Even with proper belt fit, a child that age does not have the skeletal structure necessary to prevent the hips from deforming in a crash, which often results in the child submarining under the seat belt.

Just remember too that the law is the bare minimum and you, or her in this case, should strive to at the very least, meet it. Even if he does five step I would still make sure he had a booster for protection of his hips.
