Does anyone have any experience with installing a convertible carseat into a 86' VW GTI? What seat would work best for the space available? I of course want to rear face as long as possible...

I forgot to mention my child's current stats. Currently 13 months, 20lbs and 73cm. Plan to rear face forever as there is no forward facing tether anchor point in any of our vehicles.

My son still has a few inches in his snugride 35 and we currently use that in that vehicle. I am 5'11 myself so something that won't completely have me mashed up against the steering wheel would be great. :)

Rear face forever makes me suggest a Radian with angle adjuster. I suspect your seats are quite flat? You'll need an adjuster for sure. Can you go to a Babies R Us and try one out?

Alternately a Graco MyRide for it's decently tall shell, great fit in compact spaces, and then re-evaluate for what's on the market once he outgrows that.

We have owned a plethora of old VWs in our time with our kiddos and DH is a VW fiend. He says that 86 should be the same as his 92 in terms of interior, and in his 92 we had old old style Britax seats and a Radian (RF in the center seat) and they all installed beautifully. The Radian would give you a fair deal of longevity also. Best bet is to sit in the back seat next to the child seat to strap kiddo in. He also said that you can get a bar (he called it a strut brace bar but that may not be the techincal term) that has predrilled holes for anchors to be installed in for tethering FF. Again, this may not have been a mandatory piece in 86 but we had one for his 92 and they should be identical in terms of where they bolt in, and we simply purchased the anchors from VW (though they were pricey) - the anchor bars are not difficult to find from wreckers/parts stores, I think the last time we had to purchase one we paid $40. Let me know if I can be of any more help - between my carseat knowledge and his VW knowledge, DH and I can hopefully be of service!
