Inspecting seats at Wal-Mart?

I met a mom at the park today, I noticed she had a Regent in her van so we were chatting about car seats. :pShe was telling me that she bought it after her MA was inspected that they said it was too small for her 3y old DD (Her DD is far smaller then my DD1 who still could fit in a MA for years to come). I started questioning her about who told her that.

Turns out she was shopping in Wal-Mart this summer and was approached by a "tech" (the mom said she introduced herself as a social worker) and a police officer and they asked to look at her car seat. So she takes them outside where the MA was declared too small. They told her follow them back inside to a station they had set up in the car seat section and they would help her pick out a BOOSTER for her DD. The mom thought the MA wasn't too small, and these people kept telling her it was unsafe, she was old enough to be in a booster, blah, blah. The mom said she was not putting her 3y old in a booster, and if she was buying another car seat then it would not be one at Wal-Mart. She ended up just leaving because it turned nasty with them really pestering her to buy a seat right then from Wal-Mart. She went later and bought a Regent.

Has anyone heard of this before? Do they set up car seat checks like this? It wasn't outside, but in the store, they came up to her while she was getting groceries. I was livid at the info they had given her, and felt like it was ploy to sell seats from Wal-Mart, thoughts? And they were pushing a booster, I'm CO, where the law is 40 or 4y, but the DD wasn't either.

I actually find that a bit creepy.

I would NOT feel comfortable being approached in a parking lot and then being summoned to follow two strangers. *shudder*

I read it that the mom was approached in the store, not the parking lot.

But if someone where to come up to me in a store, say they are a cop and a social worker, and demand to see my car seat, I would feel extremely threatened. I think I would call that store and find out if they had a booth of some kind approved on that day, and if so, who was running it.

We've actually had our local Fire dept/Police dept at our Wal-Mart doing seat checks. They have a big banner on one of their trucks that says something like "Get your car seats checked...help keep your kids safe." (not exact wording) But they do not approach people. If you want your seats inspected, than you just pull your car up to their area.

I would find it very odd to be approached by someone like described in the op's post. I would've left too! Good for her, though, buying a Regent!

Hmmmm, don't don't know if I would buy her story. Maybe I have been hearing too many bizarre car seat stories lately but this one seems a little out there even for WalMart.

That's so weird!

I think if two people came up to me in the store and wanted me to go outside with them, I'd be real suspicious. I guess I get too many of those "watch out for this scam" emails...

First of all -- I really hoped this woman asked for solid ID before she allowed 2 strangers to escort her to her car, and with her child too. That is just unnerving and very scary. What a way to get yourself kidnapped if she took them at their word and a cheap uniform

2nd - did she ever see this 'station' in the car seat section or were these 2 people telling her it was there?

3 - I hope you told her to contact the Walmart management and have them inspect security vid footage if they have no clue on what she's talking about. IF there was such a station in the store, I think they'd be extremely upset about the bullying she encountered.

But this is all dependent on her veracity. It's really crazy sounding, especially since there's not much room around the carseat sections to have a 'station' dedicated to it. I'm not a tech, but I thought that inspection relies soley on the installed seat in a vehicle, not at the purchase point  Can you also imagine the liability the store must accept when it has techs inside recommending, but are not employees?

Just really wierd.

Definitely wouldn't meet the criteria for a Safe Kids check. And sounds really suspicious and weird. Although, I have to admit, I'm not creeped out by strangers approaching me in a public place unless something about the situation makes me uncomfortable.

What was the reason that the MA was too small: height? weight? harness slots? I could almost buy the "push" if the debate were RFing vs. FFing, but not for getting into a booster. Boosters are presented as an option or recommendation when the child is in nothing and doesn't pass the 5 pt test or is too large for their existing seat.

At our checks and events we've encouraged people to get new seats if we run out. But we certainly don't SELL seats - we give 'em away!

How could you have a fitting station IN the store? 3/4 of the task of a fitting station is to make sure the seat fits in the vehicle and can be installed properly.

Also, Walmart is usually pretty picky about people soliciating in/around their store.

She needs to call Wal-Mart. Dh is a co-manager and that would NEVER happen in his store.

Also, I find it totally creepy too.

Strange and kinda creepy. Walmart is so picky about people setting up shop in and around the store that I have to wonder how two ill informed people would have managed to set up a "check" in a store not to mention that I know there is no way on earth that anyone would have room to set up anything in the carseat aisle of my walmart.

sounds like they were trying to get her to buy a new booster so they could 'confiscate' the old seat that was too small.

Definitely call Wal Mart and alert them of the day and approx times this happened. I bet they are a couple of cons.

My guess exactly. Was the mom kind of well-to-do looking? Daughter nicely dressed? My guess is also that this con was real and that she was targeted for prob having a carseat worth re-selling. (A "station" could consist of nothing more than a clipboard and some flyers.)

Finally some people have figured out that the carseats in many cars are the most valuable things you can remove from them.

LOL -- a two edged sword. :(

With this new Regent, I've established a new habit of throwing a blanket over the seat anytime I'm going to be inside somewhere longer than a couple of minutes. Serves two purposes, as far as I"m concerned.

1 -- helps keeps dd's seat from becoming flaming hot, especially whenever the sun is coming through the rear window. About the first 4 inches gets solid light :(

2 -- prevents someone from realizing what a dang big and beautiful car seat there is in the next car over :p Windows are tinted, so it's not that easy to see. But honestly, I'm just not that sure what motivates people to break into cars anyway :shrug-shoulders: I don't want to provide an additional rationale.

Don't mean to totally derail, but my SIL's car got stolen not too long ago and really the only thing they took out of it were their Sirius radio and their Decathlon! (She did leave her keys unlocked in it in front of the person's house she was at, but still, they took the seat)

Also, would FREAK me out to be approached by someone like that! I'm totally paranoid as it is (thanks to DH) and would have been high tailing it out of there as quickly as possible!
