Pediatrician against ERF

My SIL just told me that her pediatrician is against ERF because she claims it's more dangerous for their legs to break and believes kids should be FF at 20 lbs, 1 year!

I was in shock!! I told her no way, I'd rather a broken leg than a broken neck!

My pediatrician was against ERF when my first DD turned one. I told him that I was gong to keep rear facing her, but he didn't seem to indicate it as a safety benifit. I then printed out as much literature that I could find on the subject and hand delivered it to his office. I never heard a response from him on it.

When DD#2 turned one, he didn't mention anything to me about turning her forward facing. Maybe he just kept his mouth quiet on the subject since he didn't want to hear anything on the subject. I am hoping that he doesn't tell his other patients to turn forward facing at 1 year and 20 pounds.

Yeah, they're definitely supposed to know better -- if it were my Ped, I'd give them the AAP policy statement + the RF brochure from www.cpsafety.org & let them know that we have a new Ped....

The crucial recommendation is the first one, basically stating that children should RF to the limit of the seat. 1 yr and 20 lbs is the minimum for FF.

Some doctors only understand "doctorspeak"...

Once a patient gives a Doctor an official document from the organization leading research & policy for their specialty, the doctor would be a flaming idiot (or a masachist) to go against it -- because if they give advice contrary to the policy statement knowing the patient knows they know better, they're opening the door for litigation....

But doctors do it every day, and are even praised for it. I've yet to meet a doctor that actually abides by the AAP in everything... so many don't do it in ANYTHING. And as for all the other horrible, damaging things they're doing/advocating, I think FF at 12 months is no big deal.

Think the smartest thing any ped could do is tell them the AAP recommendations. Also say please follow your carseat owners manuals guidelines and seek the help of a child passenger tech who is qualified to help answer any car seat safety question they may have.
