I have a few questions?

My sister is expecting yet again. Her youngest will be two on February 10th. She had a designer 22 car seat that I purchased new for him before his birth. I would like to know with the 2012 regulations if it should be replaced or if it can be re-used. It has never been in an accident. Does she need to purchase a new one, or is she able to use it again.

2012 regulations allow you to use your own car seat until it is expired and/or crashed/damaged.

The same regulations would not allow you to give her (or anyone else) that seat now (liability), but if it's already hers, she can continue to use it.

I take a slightly different perspective. From the best of my understanding, the regulations don't actually allow people to continue using their seats, but rather there's nothing in the regulations to limit continued use of non-compliant seats. Regulations address the sale and transfer of non-compliant seats after the deadline, but retaining your own seat for use does not fall under this legislation.

I've never thought of it like this before. Interesting point!

I'd never thought of it that way either, glad I only have one Graco NBB left that's non-compliant, or I'd be asking you if I *should* be using my non-compliant seats! Those of us that followed the changes have a better idea about what definitely changed, but most of us probably do not really know what changed that we did not notice...
