Flip down 'shelf' for seats in back of 98 Tacoma

I'd never seen or heard of this before. The Harmony is there for size reference. Interesting - I'm not sure how easily one would install a harnessed seat there and with the cushion flipped up as directed there's nothing really to compress under the seat.

This was in a 98 Toyota Tacoma extended cab.

ETA: I didn't think to look for tether anchors but I'll bet there aren't any, and isn't the Tacoma one that can't be retrofitted?

that is interesting, but good to see that they have definitive answer as to whether it is allowed and (since obviously any vehicle with a rear seat can be a family vehicle) that they allow it

Per the latch manual 2011, Tacomas model year 96-2000 cannot be retrofit with tether anchors.
Those are some seriously weird seats. Thanks for the pics.

I've seen these a few times.

They stink.

And they scare me a little.

IIRC it was a SR22 base that I worked on, in both instances. Left the front seat unuseable, basically, and both families decided that their trucks would be traded in ASAP.

If a RF seat doesn't install well because the bottom doesn't compress, and there are no top tethers for a FF seat (as required in Canada) that pretty much only leaves a high back booster. I wouldn't want a backless with the child's head against the glass, but at least there was a lap/shoulder belt in this spot.

Forgot to mention also - this was only on the passenger's side, no option on the driver's side.

Did anyone notice that this auxiliary shelf doubles as a cup holder?

DH had a 99 Tacoma like this. I installed a Nautilus in that position one time when we had to use his truck. He had four wheel drive and he had to take me to work before when the weather was bad. I felt like it was a solid install.
