Asking employer to sponsor certification

(not exactly car seat related but IDK where it fits.)

I am a CPST and I also work for a county court services & probation department (I am a juvenile detention officer) and have been thinking about asking my director to sponsor my certification (pay fees, conferences, etc) in exchange for my services being offered to the county employees and the probationers/clients. The director is always trying to find ways to make us look good to the community and I thought this would be a good idea.

Any other techs do this or any general thoughts on whether this is a good/bad idea? Tips for ways to approach the director? Anything will be helpful. Thanks.
