I've always used just plain old warm water. It's clean enough for my taste and I'm not really sure what else could be used, so, works for us.

yep, warm water and a wash cloth should do it for all but the worst caked on stains. i wouldn't have a problem using an ordinary dish soap solution either.

to be safe, i would avoid anything with ammonia, vinegar, or bleach. i would also avoid chemical cleaners such as formula 409, febreeze, etc. but if i had used any of those on my carseat and later learned i shouldn't have, i'd still be keeping the seat, KWIM?

What's wrong with vinegar? Not that I've used it, just curious.

Anyways, if the seat only needs a little wipe down I just use warm water and a cloth, seems to do the trick. If it's a stinky filthy car seat - I use a few drops of dishwashing liquid (mild) in a big bowl of warm water, if the seat REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLY STINKS BAD then I'll put a little bit of lemon juice in there, heavily diluted but it seems to get most smells out.

it's just that vinegar is really acidic. i don't think it would do any harm really, and if it did, it would only be on the outer surface of the shell, it wouldn't penetrate the plastic. i doubt it would cause any structural harm.
