BUT, look at the seat she was in. A rf'ing RA55...with the straps on the 3rd slots. What 20mo old uses the 3rd slot rearfacing???? Either the straps were too high or that kid has got one seriously long torso. My almost 3yr old would only be on the 2nd slots.

Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled they are OK and posted the link on my FB as most who aren't aware of the benefits of extended rf'ing won't even notice the slots of the seat...but it does make me go hmmm.....

I don't think 3rd strap slot are out of the ordinary. my daughter is normal to short torsoed and is about to move up to the 3rd slots. Only a hair below still. She's 17 months.

Yeah, that seems in line with 18-24 month olds of average size I've put in that seat before.

Considering DS would have almost totally outgrown that seat RF at 20 months -- that slot seems about right to me.

Off the top of my head, I think my daughter was getting close to the 3rd slots when I moved her out of the RA55 a few months ago. She is 21 months old now. A little taller than average but not outrageously so. Some kids are just taller than others.

At 16 months, my DD was already over the third slots in the RA55. We were considering getting it but that changed my mind. I wanted her to have room to FF in it eventually, but obviously she wouldn't have much. She runs 95% for height and her torso does seem long. She outgrows shirts first. So yeah, I can see it.

My average height dd was hovering near the 3rd slots around her 3rd birthday. Based on the pic of the toddler in the Boulevard, I'd guess their heads are about the same height in relation to the shell (it's a weird angle, but comparing her head to the headrest, and headrest to the shell...). Either way, it worked, and I'm glad they were all okay.

DD2 has been on the 3rd slot for months in her RA55. She's 25 months and was 33" at her check up which is average height. She's not much over it but definitely at it.

Funny what our brains pick out of pictures. The first thing I saw when looking at the very first picture was that mom doesn't have adequate vehicle head support. She's not buckled, either, so clearly (hopefully), it was just for a photo.

You can tell it's parked :) The background isn't moving and if you look in the reflection of the mirror you can see dad turned around looking in the back seat. The article also says she had her seat belt on at the time of the crash.

The caption says the picture was taken in their brand new 2012 Murano. They wrecked their older model one.

Wow, nice read!
Sadly 2 moms in my preschool just moved their kids to backless boosters (out of the harness). These kids are 3 or 4.
I park next to them a lot so my bumper sticker of rear-face to 4, harness to 6+ and booster to 12 is very, very visible, among other stickers like "My Preschool rides rear-facing." Plus they see me put the 4.5 year-old RF all the time.

I heard them talking about their seats and they said "yeah, well, he's 40 lbs. so I'm sure it's OK."

If they wanted more info on my wildly decked out van, they could always ask, so I didn't approach them. But you'd think they'd want more protection for such young kids.

Anyway, good article!

Unless that headrest comes up A LOT, I don't see how that could be adequate for anybody!
