HBB that do not require a head rest?

My son will likely RF to 5 or beyond, so he may go straight to booster when he goes FF. Our primary vehicle has no headrests in the back, so I will need a high back booster that does not require a headrest. What are my options? I have some time to save and can pick up OT if needed, so price is not a factor.

The Clek Oobr has a structural headrest. But, it doesn't work for all children in all vehicles- some kids are very uncomfortable in it (but try it with something under the feet to give leg support before deciding it just won't work because of discomfort, and try it in recline if you have LATCH as that sometimes improves fit- however in some vehicles/for some kids it's not a good match no matter what you do.)

Britax says theirs do not.
Graco says theirs do not.

That said, neither brand seems as "sturdy" as some of the boosters that now say they DO need it. So...

(There are also some brands I think we haven't heard from on the subject, and Recaro is... controversial at best on their answer as it directly contradicts the car seat manual in two ways, but I didn't list them and none of them have a metal-reinforced back either, I don't think.)

I wouldn't rule out a Frontier.... there's no real data to indicate that harnessing at older ages is in any way unsafe, and it's really by far the tallest booster available (heck, at sale prices, it's cheaper than some dedicated boosters even if you never use the harness). I wonder if anyone with a Kiddy will chime in, I can't seem to find the manual online....but the World Plus is almost as tall as the Frontier. :)

When DH saws-alled (sawsall'ed? You know what I mean), he made specific mention of aluminum or something in the part that attaches the headrest to the body of the Vivo. Because it was crazy hard to saws-all in half, and because DH wanted to try to extricate it from the plastic to put it in his scrap metal pile from work

That's why I'm SO confused about this whole thing - seriously, the Vivo is most solid booster I've come across, with the exception of the Oobr, maybe (I didn't play around with it a lot and really can't remember). I can't wrap my head around it, except that maybe it falls under the "it wasn't tested that way" (because it's not, and not required to eiher)header - so technically it's misuse.

Regardless, I have a ProBooster headed my way .

I think KQ meant Oobr, though I'm sure the foonf also has a structural headrest, someone must be working on their foonf fund and have it stuck on the brain

The metal reinforcement on the vivo is visible on the back of the seat. I'm most confused that the vivo needs head support. I'd guess that all other boosters (aside from the oobr) only don't need head support because it's not tested or required, not because they perform better.

The seats that do not require head support are made by: graco, britax, evenflo, harmony (they recommend head support, but don't require), chicco, combi, and compass.

I ordered the Kiddy Cruiserfix booster yesterday and befor doing so I read the manual and this is what it said on page 11 of the manual.

• If the vehicle headrest holds the booster car
seat forward of the vehicle seat back, the
headrest should be adjusted or removed
(Fig. 11).

Kiddy does not require headrests. The manual says so and I also confirmed it with them through e-mail about a week ago.

There's a Mom here in town who has an Oobr, if you're interested in trying it before you buy I'm sure she'd be glad to meet with you. :)

The ProBooster manual also advised to remove the vehicle headrest.

You might want to contact KWP just to make sure their manual is accurate, even though it seems pretty obvious in text.

ETA: Just saw the post where someone had email confirmation from KWP about not requiring vehicle head support.

I will post pictures of my 2 kids in it. I got the cruiserfix for my 5yr old. Ordered it from Amazon with free shipping, they say 2weeks, but I am betting it will be here sooner.

And the money is already set aside, assuming the child fits. ;)

The new Maxi-Cosi rodifix does not require a headrest. I just contacted them via facebook. This was there post, Hi Keesha! Great question. It does not require a headrest to be in place. Thanks for reaching out!
