News Michigan weakens helmet law

Admin - Webmaster
Michigan now allows motorcyclists who are 21 and older to ride without a helmet if they carry extra insurance and have passed a motorcycle safety course or have had their motorcycle endorsement for at least two years, effective April 12, 2012. The state previously required helmets for all riders. For details, go to http://www.iihs.org/laws/HelmetUseCurrent.aspx.

How would that affect enforcement? Can they pull over an un-helmeted rider and check his or her license for age and date of endorsement? Will they, even if they can, knowing that it might or might not result in being able to issue a citation?

Sounds like a can of worms to me.

I saw a MI state trooper on TV tonight that said their policy would pretty much be no enforcement because they'd have to pull every unhelmeted motorcycle rider over and there would be no way to check the extra insurance requirement.

Gee, I can't wait for everybody's insurance to go up because of this.

In AR anyone over 21 doesn't have to wear a helmet ( except for my husband because he has to listen to me :p). I think it is stupid to not wear a helmet, but as adults they can make their own decisions
