Car seat for plane travel with 2.5 year old?

We are flying to the UK this summer with our tall 2.5 year old (38.5", 34lb). He is currently in a true fit premier. We used this seat on the plane when we flew to the UK last summer but I am reluctant to take it this year as he was obviously uncomfortable on the long daytime flight home with the person in front's seat reclined (despite me repeatedly asking them if they could put it up just a little bit).

I plan on getting him the Britax Frontier 85 as his next seat for the car (new baby is due in September and will need the TF by next fall) so was thinking about just getting this seat early to take on the plane this summer but I read on here that this seat is not particularly recommended for travel (heavy, expensive if damaged). So I was considering getting an Evenflo Maestro for this summer's travel (we will be there for two months and need carseat during that time).

I'm looking for advice on whether this seems to be a good plan. It kind of seems to me that I will be buying two seats that serve the same purpose, although with my tall guy he will be able to stay in the FR85 longer than the EF. On the other hand having a second seat for travel does make sense to me. Are there any other options that I haven't considered?

I'd do something like the Complete Air or Maxi Cosi Pria, rear face him for the flight so he's comfortable, rear face him in all cars so he's safer, and that's that. The Pria and Complete Air aren't super light, but they're not heavier than the True Fit.

I have a TFP and I wouldn't want to travel with it either. We use a Combi Coccoro, but it's likely your son has outgrown it already, and he definitely has rear facing.

He's a big 2.5 year old. My 9/16/09 babe is 24 pounds clothed and about 34".
