What is the maximum age you would harness a child (assuming you already had a seat that would accommodate their size/weight with no additional out of pocket expense)

I said 7-8 because my DD is over 5 years old and cannot sit still at all, and I just bought her a FR85 and she has like 3-4 clicks left in the harness. So IF she can actually sit in a booster before 7-8 years old that's totally fine. But I can totally see her still being harnessed. I wouldn't force her to if she didn't want to or was embarrassed, unless it was a safety issue.

If the child wanted to stay harnessed or didn't care either way, I'd continue using it until it was outgrown or expired. If child wanted to be in a booster, I would follow nhtsa guidelines of 7yo for primary vehicle but allow boosters in other vehicles as long if child sat properly, etc. Although I have plenty of kids of all ages in my ext. family my own are still little so I reserve the right to change my mind when they reach those ages :p

Well, I had an 8 year old harnessed because he couldn't sit right in the booster. Sofi might be harnessed as long as possible in Grandma's car because it means she can stay in the center (lap belt), I'm undecided. So I don't really have a maximum.

I don't have a max. DS2 is 6 and has at least a year left in his nautilus. I'm in no hurry to move him out.

My son was harnessed til right before his 7 th birthday. However last month he climbed in the FR85 and he rode home harnessed and liked it.

auto correct hates me

I said 7-8 but I really wanted 6-7 to be an option. DD was harnessed till 6.5 in the Radian and mature enough to be booster'd full time by the time she was 7.

I'm aiming for the same age range for DS.

Well rachel is 8.9yrs and just outgrew the harness on the FR85. I wanted to reach 9. She still wants to be harness.

I don't have a maximum harness age if they fit and are okay with it. I'm comfortable bolstering at 6 if they can sit properly.

no max age.... just maturity.. so far, all kids under 8 crowd I watch are harnessed, either due to age or not maturity wise.. the kids in the 6-8 years old that I daily transport are boys and the 8 yr old is no where mature for it. The 6 yr old is still rear-facing. So, really it all depends on maturity and age wise... such as even though supposedly my future 3 year old is mature enough to be in a booster (supposedly!) I will definitely not put that 3 yr old in a booster!

I would want to harness as long as he still fit the seat. If he asked to move out of it and was 10 yrs old I would consider it.

I don't have a maximum. If they still fit in my FR and needed or wanted to be harnessed I would let them. If they wanted to sit in a booster and could sit properly I would let them be in a booster full time at 6-7 (except that it is harder to squeeze boosters in my van).

As long as the kid was ok with being harnessed and fit a seat we already had I don't have an age limit. If new research comes out that offers evidence of higher neck loads in ff harnessed seats I'll reconsider.

If your child hadn't outgrown the harness, but asked (on more than one occasion, but was compliant/not really upset when you said no) to be boostered full time, would that change your answer?

My son was begging to be in a booster when he was 5. At 6, I let him, but he couldn't sit properly, so he went back into a harness. That was the story for age 7 and 8. He's now learned that it's a million times easier to buckle a 5 point, than it is a booster in our van, so he happily rides in a harness.

If my child could sit properly in a booster and was an appropriate age, I'd give them a try, but if they didn't sit properly or took too long to buckle, I'd go back to the harness.
