So I kept thinking the 3 rd from the bottom slots in ds's Radian were looking pretty low on him, like way below his shoulders (I think it doesn't help that I'm required to have the crotch strap on the farthest- out slot, since he's over 30 lbs. I've wondered if that makes him slide down a little). So today I tried moving them up. No go. They ended up being a tiny bit over his shoulders, and it turned out the slots were actually blocked by the headwings, so to use those slots, the wings would end up too high.
Some days, this seat hates me.

I'm totally ok with using the 4th slots if the are slightly above the shoulder when RF. I had to for a little while until Gambit grew some torso. The 3rd slots were just way too far down and created a horrible fit. There is such a big gap between the 3rd and 4th slots that this is a common occurance.

Check with Diono, but I know previously they said the 30 lb thing was more of a guideline. You should still follow the diagram in the manual, showing the strap should not come from in front of the child.

I have a call in to Allana at Diono. Forgot about the time difference so I called when it was about 5:30 am over there.
I measured ds this morning (the best I could--he was about as cooperative as an almost-3 year old would be), and sure enough, he's grown about an inch and a half, if my measuring was right. I thought he looked taller. So, turning 3 this Saturday, he's 32.5 lbs, 40.5 inches tall (keep in mind my 6 1/2 year old was 46" the last time I measured her!) and had about a 14 inch torso. No wonder he's not fitting in his Radian the way he was before!
Darn inconvenient growth spurt.
