Anyone see today's Dear Abby?

CAR BOOSTER SEATS ARE RIGHT CHOICE FOR SMALL CHILDREN

DEAR ABBY: What do you think of a grandmother who has her 7-year-old grandson sit in a baby car seat when she's driving? The boy weighs 65 pounds and is 4 1/2 feet tall. His parents don't want to cause a rift with her, as she helps them after school. He looks ridiculous and must feel embarrassed in front of his friends. Should relatives intervene? -- GRANNY'S NEIGHBOR
DEAR NEIGHBOR: I took your question to a public affairs specialist with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. He said that children through the age of 12 should always ride in the back seat. He also reminded me that seat belts were designed for adults, not children.

According to the NHTSA, the 7-year-old should be in a "booster" seat. A booster seat positions the seat belt so it fits properly over the shoulder and chest -- the strongest parts of the child's body -- so it won't cut him or her on the neck or face in case of an accident.

The NHTSA used to recommend that children 8 to 12 years old or 4 feet 9 inches and under use a booster seat. However, it now recommends that parents visit its website, www.nhtsa.gov, to choose a correct seat. Click on the child safety section, and you'll find an area titled "Which Car Seat Is the Right One for Your Child." There are also videos in this section showing parents how to install the seats correctly.

The recommendations are national and do not vary among the states. And yes -- this information should be shared with the child's parents and the grandmother in order to ensure the boy's safety.

It's good info, but I was just thinking that maybe grandma has him in a Frontier or something.

I read that and thought the child was in a High Back Booster and the neighbor thought that was a "baby seat". Some people see any seat as babyish.

Good for Dear Abby asking the experts! A lot of people think a booster of any kind is a "baby seat". It really irritates me.

On the other hand, it is POSSIBLE that Grandma has him in a seat he's outgrown and that's why it looks ridiculous. But yeah, if she cares enough to keep him in anything, it seems more likely she's done some research and it's probably a booster seat and this neighbor hasn't done her research. ;)

Either way, good for Dear Abby for handling it so well! :)

The fact that the "neighbor" knows the parents don't want to cause a rift makes it sound like it is the parents. I think that's great that a lot of people will read that answer than normally see anything about boosters for "big kids".

Go Abby! Too many people still think car seats are for babies, boosters are for toddlers and bigger kids need nothing but a seat belt. I hope this message reaches a lot of people. :)

Btw, tomorrow I am dropping off 120 Safe Kids flyers for our preschool to distribute. Maybe by the end of the school year, I will be able to drive through the parking lot without shielding my eyes and shaking my head as much as I have been lately.

We have trouble convincing grandma that the grandkids DO needs boosters or other seats. Luckily at this point with three kids we just swap cars when Grandma takes the kids and I usually keep a spare low back booster in the back if a cousin wants a ride.
