Window shades and backseat entertainment

Has anyone had any luck with back window shades? I have a 97 Honda Civic, and I tried 2 different shades on my back window to shade my son's RF Roundabout. First, I just had a pull down type, that conked out and didn't cover much. Now I have this odd oval shaped spongy shade that covers a large portion of the window. I have a lot of trouble seeing through it with the rear view mirror, and it doesn't seem to offer too much shade. Both items I got at an auto parts store. Any recommendations?

Also, I know my son would love to be FF. He arches around trying to see me or out the window. Would a mirror be a good option? I don't have headrests on the back seat, so what would I attach it to?

Finally, how have you kept your little ones in the car? Especially if they are RF? My one year old son does not have a lovey; he would rather have a pacifier than anything else. He likes to ride in his stroller because he can see everything going on. He's always swinging around in the shopping cart to see where we're headed. Even before he had good head control as an infant, he cried unless he was forward in the Bjorn. So, any suggestions for keeping an *active* one happy in the car?

Can he see out the window?
MY DD was mostly RFing in a Britax and it was tall enough that she could see out the window- made a huge difference.

In fact, just last week my 4.5 mo old DS was in his Britax RFing a lot and I realized that he's happier much longer in that than his infant seat because he could see out- even if we were in the woods and there were only trees.

My DD loved the fabric or bath books in the car. I would keep a bunch in the front seat and just toss them back when she dropped one.

As far as shade I think your best bet would be to get the windows tinted. It's not that pricey and is wonderful!

check your state's tint laws. while florida (skipspin's state) may allow dark tint, many states do not. MA only allows 35% VLT (visible light transmission), which means not a lot of darkening at all. this is for passenger cars. SUVs are usually allowed darker limits. we just got our car tinted to 35% VLT and it doesn't do much to keep the sun out of our DD's eyes. on the plus side, 99.9% of UV is blocked, so at least i know she won't get sunburned.

try the static cling-type shades, which you can get at babies R us. they are safe because they can't become projectiles like the other ones you've tried can.

agreed on the soft books. those helped us a lot.
