I was surprised today!

I was teaching a riding lesson today and one of my adult students took a spill (she's fine). I told her that she should get a new helmet because even though the outside didn't show damage there could still be damage on the inside. She said, "Oh so it's kind of like car seats, you're supposed to replace those after an accident also because it's already handled some stress." I was surprised and happy at the same time!

Love it when people say stuff like that!

It's interesting that bike and riding helmets are replaced after a smash, but Hockey helmets are (so I was told) made/designed to take multiple hits (ie puck to head).

Wonder if there is a design difference, or just the impact and/or not even true! LOL

That's interesting about hockey helmets! I've also wondered the same about football ones.

I have seen horseback riding helmet that barely had a scuff on the outside, but the interior was definitely compressed. I've heard that riding helmets are designed to take two impacts in one accident (ground and potential hoof). So it could be the design and type of impact that make the hockey ones different.

But yes, I definitely love it when people catch me off guard with their car seat knowledge!

It can depend on the type of foam. For example, EPS is usually one time use, where EPP (which is spongier) can handle more than one impact.
