Mom goes to the Ped for a check-up for her 7 year old (who's 40lbs, ~43 inches). She's currently harnessed in a Maestro. She mentions to the Dr about car seats and $&@#)$ hit the fan...

Dr SENDS THE 7 YEAR OLD to stand out in the hall by herself. Then lays into mom, saying that she's "pyschologically damaging" her daughter by having her harnessed when none of her peers are, and she'll be ridiculed and Mom will see the effects of this down the road, with her daughter's self-esteem. Uhh, say wha?

This is the same Ped that, when another friend asked about RFing, said, "well, I guess... but isn't it more work for you? That seems like a bother." and also told her that he's sure she's the ONLY parent in the practice to do such a thing :scratcheshead:

So yeah...

I would ask why he is going against AAP recommendations and if he still recommends rice cereal for all babies to STTN. I wish peds would just keep their mouths shut about car seats if they can't keep up with current recommendations!

:yeahthatmad:

My DD's pedi has never talked car seats with me, but when I mentioned she was still RF at 18 months, she was like " Thank you! You get it! I am tired of parents telling me their kids won't fit RF past one". Have I mentioned how much I  her?

Making a child be safer than her peers will NOT psychologically damage her. My parents made me wear a bike helmet when riding my bike before it was law. NO OTHER KID WORE A HELMET. I got teased, I hated it, I was pissed at my parents, but I lived. As an adult, I am thankful that my parents loved me enough to put my safety above my ego, and their example gave me the resolve to do the same for my child.

I recommend she fire her pediatrician. The doctor is the employee of the parent, and the parent is the boss. If I spoke to my supervisor like that, I would likely be canned. A person who doesn't know what they are talking about but thinks they do can be dangerous, especially when they are an individual of perceived authority. I would not trust the health of my child to someone like that. I find it incredibly irresponsible for a doctor to advocate following the ignorant masses instead of doing what is in the best interest of the child.

Wow, that is unbelievable!! I would definitely find a new ped. It's stories like these that make me so thankful to have our ped. When we went for DDs 3 year check up and I mentioned she was still rearfacing he exclaimed "AWESOME!!" He is so respectful of our parenting decisions.
