Barely 4 month old has outgrown KF30

A friend of ours is using our Keyfit and her son just turned 4 months and she texted me a picture asking if he's outgrown it yet. He is just about to outgrow it. He has about 1.25" above his head. He is barely 13lbs.

They have a very limited budget, and have BRU gift cards, so she needs a convertable that can be bought there. (Either online or in store).

I've recommended the Radian and True Fit, and the Complete Air. Are there any I'm missing that have tall shells?

Does she have the newborn padding out? Can you post a picture? That's one heck of a skinny kid to be that weight and outgrowing a 30" height limit seat at 4 months. (Is he in cloth diapers? Just trying to think if there could be something lifting him up?)

No, she took the insert out at 11lbs, that was the first question I asked. And I told her to sell the keyfit. I think they have about $200 in gift cards so they could buy pretty much any seat with the finds from the keyfit. Oh, and yes he wears cloth diapers.

I stuck ds in the keyfit this weekend to see where he was at. He's 2 and I was surprised his head is about even with the top of the seat. He's tall too. He's on the 4th slots of the Radian.

I'm in the app. If your in the US today is the last day if the trade in.

So, here's the pic.

I asked her to send a more side view than this, but this is what I've got for now. I asked her to measure above the book and she said it's 1.25".

Looks like she should take out the head rest insert as well especially if he is almost outgrown the seat, it cant be used if the harness is on the top slots

Thanks for the advice. If there are about 2 inches, that's great because it will give her a little more time. I told her it may be time to take the headrest out, but she's worried about his head when he sleeps. I think she has kept the harness on the 2nd slots.

Thanks for the help.

I would have her measure with him actually buckled into the seat. That can make a HUGE difference.

For head support, have her use rolled wash cloths or receiving blankets along the sides of his head. He looks like he's too tall for the built in head support, but I understand her concern with him being so young and not having great head control yet.

And I wouldn't jump to buying a new seat quite yet. I think he has a little growing room left. Cloth diapers do make a difference and he may "outgrow" it a little sooner due to that, but I don't think it's outgrown yet.

Not unheard of. I had a post here with pics when ds outgrew his by 8 weeks ;)

I was hoping you would chime in. I thought it was you who had a freakishly tall baby who outgrew the KF pretty early.

I'll pass along all the advice. I'm glad it seems he has a little bit left before it's an emergency. I think they said they were planning a trip down to BRU next week. So, what's her best bet with a convertable? True Fit since it's tall even though it has a 35 lb weight limit?

He looks like he has a few months left in it but it's always hard to tell w/o seeing where the shell ends v/s the cover.

What kid of CDs does she use? I've CD'd for 5yrs, tried every CD on the market and even taught CDing classes for a few years so I can probably be able to help you find some CDing solutions there to minimize bulk while maintaining absorbancy. Fortunately this is typically easier to do with boys than girls when CDing .

Re: EKF30

I'd have her use a ruler instead of a book to measure and take the canopy off to get the best look. DS2 is really tall and has a long torso and still lasted in his KF30 till 9 months. I thought he was outgrowing it at 6 months but it took a while to grow that last inch!

Here's a pic of DS2 on his last day in the KF30 at 9 months (he was 19lbs).
