Traveling with 3.5 yr old and 7 week old

I may be traveling with both children in March to FL to see the grandparents. DS1 will be a little over 3.5 (7.28.08); he's very small for his age, less than 30 lbs, and fit rear facing in the Cosco Scenera last time I checked (about a mo. ago). He was getting close to the height limit on the Scenera for rear facing. At home, he rides in a Radian and Complete Air (rear facing). DS2 will be about 7 weeks old when we fly. He's big - over 8 lbs at birth, so he may not be on the same trajectory as his brother.

I know that it's not recommended, but we won't be buying a seat on the plane for the infant.

The decision from here is what to do about car seats. My first thought is to take the Scenera on the airplane and have DS1 sit in it on the plane. And have the grandparents buy a second Scenera for the baby to ride in when we get there. That way we won't check a car seat. The grandparents could keep the Scenera for us and we could plan on traveling with one car seat until DS2 requires his own seat (due to age or temperament).

If DS1 is too tall to RF in the the Scenera, we could take one of the other carseats on the plane (Radian - I love the way it sits on the plane, but it's SO heavy and I might be solo with the boys, and it's sometimes tricky to install once we arrive or the Complete Air - never flown with it). Or we could FF DS1 for the trip.

Other thoughts would be to have the grandparents buy a Maestro for DS1, but he's never been forward facing in a car (he forward faces on the airplane), and I'm not sure I want to start that.

Or have the grandparents buy an infant seat for DS2? Is there anything cheap enough to consider over a Scenera? I'm not sure if the convenience of being able to keep the baby in the seat is worth it.

    Thoughts?

I'd take the Complete Air on the plane, and pick up a Scenera for the little guy. That way you don't have to worry about FF DS1 or the sometimes tricky install of the RN. I don't think buying an infant seat is the best idea. Seems like a waste of money, IMO.
