Question Careseat safety class

Got asked to teach a carseat safety class at our pregnancy care center. I am not a tech and they know that but I am a carseat nut LOL
My question is what major points would be best to bring up and how should I organize the class? I know a lot about carseats and safety but not how to formulate a class. Any links to brochures or handouts would be amazing! Thanks for your help.

i strongly recommend you bring a tech in to help. as far as organizing the class, you could touch on erf, eh, and other best practices, the bigger points on proper installs, proper use i.e bundleme's and chest clips and the pinch test. and dont touch the attendee's seats, ESP if there is no tech to help you.

I agree you should ask a tech to come with you. I wouldn't feel comfortable taking a class from someone who is not a tech.

I know not to come across as a carseat nut LOL

I will print out brochures to hand out. I dont know the details of what they want out of the class. It is for a non profit center. I will see if I can find a tech in the area but I have looked before and couldn't find one.
I don't think it's going to be a seat check type class. From what I understand they just want me to talk about tips and safety info.
Thanks

I would absolutely not do seat checks. You should just pass out information. Tell them to read car manual and seat manuals. Look up local seat checks for them at hospitals or fire stations and refer them here.

Thanks Wendy.
I am absolutely not doing a seat check. They just want to inform people of carseat safety tips and things to watch for when choosing a seat for your child. They already looked into liability issues and said as long as I inform people I am not an instructor or a tech that everything is fine. It's just an informative meeting.
I spoke with the director of our safe kids coalition and he said the same thing.
Thanks for the info

Thanks! I have about a month to get ready for it and I think I have talked myself into taking the cpst class coming up in the middle of march. If we have the money I am definitely taking it.

I would bring a tech. Heck, I am a tech and I would bring another tech. I'm still learning new things constantly. People aren't going to be as of towards someone with no credentials other than "carseat nut." :twocents:

You know... I think on car seat basics and best practices she will be fine. The techs here on c-s.o are the best of the best... the techs that took the class a long time ago and have never seen a Radian, well, not so much. People at this class aren't going to think 'oh, she's not a.tech so she.doesn't know what she's talking about' she's going to start giving her presentation and it will be obvious that she is an advocate and has a strong working knowledge of cps. If she sticks to the stuff in the flyers and brochures there's not a lot of room for error, yk. Don't overthink it :)

Thanks! That's exactly what I am hoping to come across as -an advocate for child safety. Not trying to impersonate a tech at all. They people asking me to help out just know I'm more knowledgable than them in the carseat world.
