lower anchor and top tether locations

If a seating position has lower anchors, will it also have a top tether anchor for that position?

(this question stems from an outing in a friend's Ford minivan)

Yes in a Ford minivan. It must.

There are some exceptions. Some convertible cars don't have top tethers, though they do have lower anchors.

LATCH stands for Lower Anchors and Top Tethers for Children. So yes, it most situations there should be a top tether.

OK, thanks, that's what I thought! I didn't think there would be a position with lower anchors available and no top tether. Just curious, is the reverse ever true? (ie are there positions with no lower anchors but there is still a top tether anchor - since you can still use top tether with seat belt installs?)

I had DD's seat installed outboard driver side third row with lower anchors, but couldn't find the top tether anchor right behind it. There was one slightly to the left of it (toward the center), but I wasn't sure if that was for where the center seat was (or if it allows borrowing of lower anchors) or for the seat she was in.

I don't know model/year, but the center back seat only has a lap belt and no head rest, so neither or us wanted anyone to sit there!

Yes, the reverse is often true. My van has 3 sets of full LATCH & 2 "extra" top tethers. Dh's truck has top tethers in all 3 positions in the back & just 2 sets of lower anchors.

Yup. The do sometimes put TT where there are not LA. Without looking in the manual I would bet that TT slightly off center was meant to be used by either the center position or the outboard position.
