Sears and non-compliant seats

What are stores supposed to do with the 2011 seats still in stock? It seems like such as waste just6 to throw them out, I'm sure there's many parents out there that would love to get these at a discount or free. They are still safe to use, just can't sell them. Hopefully they figure something out rather than the landfill.

Unfortunately it is also illegal to give them away. Like others have said, they have had plenty of time to mark down seats and get them sold.

What about all the craigslist and Kijiji postings from people trying to sell used seats?!? I'd never buy used anyways but now it's illegal. I think I am going to post on my local craiglist to advise all car seat sale posts be removed

Are there any car seat recycling programs up there? Maybe if you know of one, you could get them in touch with Sears?

I called transport canada to find out who to call, he said something about it being illegal to IMPORT, not sell... non-compliant seats as of Jan 1. He then asked how I knew the seats were not compliant, and gave me the number to consumer or health canada, I can't remember... anyway I called and gave them the heads up. I think it would also be wise to put in a call to sears head office but I'm not a tech so calling as a 'concerned mother' probably won't hold much water lol...

Apparently he needs to read the memo - you didn't happen to get his name did you? I might just be candid enough to tell him the exact name of the memo and request that he reference it before giving out inaccurate info. ;)

no didn't get his name sorry, just dialed transport canada and hit the options to get to motor vehicle issues - car seats etc.

the lady from health canada got back to me and asked me to email her a list of the car seats on sears' website and if anyone has seen any in stores that they are 100% sure are not compliant, to send them to her so she can address the issue.

from what I can see on their website, with what I understand about the new regulations anyway, the following are not compliant - can a tech double check this list for me before I send the email?

- evenflo embrace with the Z handle: http://www.sears.ca/product/evenflo...comforttouch-seat-pad/632-000111740-33111037C

- eddie bauer travel system with car seat: http://www.sears.ca/product/eddie-bauer-hampton-lightweight-travel-system/632-000479196-01720CHPN

- graco snugride: http://www.sears.ca/product/graco-snugride-metropolitan-infant-car-seat/632-000289363-1805204

- graco snugride: http://www.sears.ca/product/graco-snugride-infant-car-seat/632-000289363-8F30OGE

- safety first onboard seat: http://www.sears.ca/product/safety-1st8482-onboard-infant-car-seat/632-000479196-22309CARQ (EDITED TO ADD)

these are just the ones I can recognize that I think are noncompliant... correct? any others?

edit: while I had her on the phone, I also mentioned the fact that the media and parents are severely misinformed when it comes to the new regulations and tons of incorrect info is out there. not sure if she can do anything as they already did a press release (which the media obviously chose to just skim over and didn't take the time to understand and report accurately...) but I thought it was worth mentioning.

The nearest carseat recycling program on the West Coast is in Vancouver, Washington. I doubt Sears would transport their seats there for recycling, unfortunately.

Not everything is opening up properly for me, but the onboard is probably compliant. The designer 22 travel system might be. The "Z" handle evenflo definitely not.

Snugride - if it's a 22lb snugride might be depending on the model. I know they had a 35lb snugride travel system in stock at the store I was at yesterday and it was the old SR35 - definitely not compliant.

These seats have already been taken down. That was fast!

You totally wouldn't - and you kknow the "z" handle would be so convenient. ;)

If you feel like having a bit of fun go for it - I am curious to know what they do...

So we went to the mall tonight and at Sears we asked if we could buy the evenflo with the "z" handle (we meaning DH, because I am a chicken). They said that they had 2 in stock and we could buy it  They also told us that to make it work right we needed to buy this separate head rest thing (AKA after market head rest)  We didn't go so far as to buy it because what would I do with an old Evenflo that probably won't even fit in our small car, so I don't know if the system would have kicked it out when we tried to purchase, but I would think that their system would have kicked something out when it told us there were 2 in stock?

Assuming nothing has changed, they have a book they use to track stock and check what's available. Too bad you couldn't have pulled the "forgot my card at home" when you went to pay to see if there was a stop sale in the computer.

It's sad that they're selling them still. Big  to Sears - especially considering that the manager and at least 2 of the baby department staff know now...

eta: Sears does have a good return policy :ROTFLMAO:

Oh, here are the correct links:

Just read something on recycling.

Specific to car seats.

Also, the Recycling Council of B.C. (604-RECYCLE) suggested Pacific Mobile Depots, which sets up a depot in Vancouver, North Vancouver and Coquitlam every third Saturday of the month from 9 until noon. Best of luck to all the parents out there!

I didn't follow up on this, planning on dropping my expired seat from CL off at TRU next trade sale...

As for non-compliant seats. Thought someone here said, SKJP wasn't compliant, though I know SKJP Booster claims they're *good* but my email asking good vs compliant was not answered. Was debating one, but want a compliant one.

I broke the hyperlinks. Try copy and paste and see if that works? Sorry it leaves my post messy but hopefully it helps.

OT, but I once had someone come for a seat check with a travel system infant seat they had bought at Sears the day before. It was expiring in less than 3 months.

Wow! That's bad! You know, I always thought Sears wasn't all that bad a place to buy a seat. Looks like I was totally wrong on that one - makes the CT seats come up smelling like roses when they at least have 2yrs left on them.
