I have a RWD Safari van. I only drive on city streets, but if the plow & sand truck haven't been around my van doesn't do so well. It has decent snow tires. But when the temp is up & down around the freezing mark, we get some awful ice and there are a lot of hills. I'd like some chains for the handful of times each year that I have to deal with impossibly icy hills. Any recommendations?
On the one hand, I kinda like the diamond-style chains that are actual CHAINS. I can put them on after I leave the cleared highway just to get past the hills in our village. But if I end up having to leave them on to drive a bit in town on half-plowed, half-ice, will I want cables instead? Are the chains too hard on tires if there's pavement showing through here & there?
