I'm meeting with our NICU director tomorrow to see how I can help out up there with car seat education. I would like to type up a handout for them to include in their new parent folders. I'm thinking of doing a what to do/not to do type handout. Thoughts on what should be included? I have a few things in mind, but wanted to other's thoughts too. :)

Straps at or below shoulder level
Blankets kept OUTSIDE of the harness (for some reason I always see this issue with preemies)
Deffinately address aftermarket head and body supports and strap covers
rolled towel at the crotch
rolled blankets next to baby, outside of the harness
Include a picture or two
and adress which kind of winter car seat covers are appropriate

When my daughter was released from our NiCU, I had to bring her car seat up and they had to approve how she was in it. I also had to take an education class on car seats. Is that not the rule everywhere?

I agree with the others and I'd also include a list of seats that fit tiny babies well. I can't tell you how many times we've had to send parents out to buy a new seat because the one they had was too big. Having the list is quite handy.

Not all hospitals do that. At this one they have to see the carseat and they will talk basics (sometimes) to you, but that's it. The nurses aren't trained and I've done several checks with parents after they've been discharged with very bad mistakes. That's why I'm excited to be able to talk to the director and get something worked out so I can share my knowledge a bit more. :)

Good suggestion. I have a list upstairs. I should copy it and take that with.
