RF vs FF on airplane

We're traveling to attend a funeral this weekend.

DS is 3.5 yrs old, 38" and 32 lbs with clothes & shoes.
At home he is RF in the car.
We're taking his Classic Marathon on the plane.
The HUGS on his MA are starting to tear.
Would you RF or FF in the plane?
What about in the rental car?

We're flying southwest.
If FF in the plane I need a seat belt extender or to flip the buckle.
If I switch him to FF, I'll have to move the harness height & switch the latch connectors if I use latch to install in the car.
Is there anything else I need to know?

We're also bringing DD (8 wks, lap child :() & her snugride22 & hoping she gets a seat.
DH is not willing to play for a seat on the plane for her but knows that if her seat gets checked I won't use it, I'll buy a new one. I HATE her carseat so it's fine with me if I get to buy her a new one.

I would absolutely FF a 3-year-old on the plane, no question. I mean, you certainly CAN RF, but I wouldn't bother.

I would still RF in the car. On the other hand, if there was some incompatibility issue or something, I wouldn't hesitate to FF if necessary.
