Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding the safety of using 2 infant seats rear facing in the 3rd row of a 2011 Toyota Sienna? I have triplets 3 months and a 2 year old. The concern is with the sienna there is only 1 anchor or latch behind the 3rd row seat. The other child seat installed in the 3rd row would have to secured with the seatbelt. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

Installing with the seatbelt is 100% ok. Our Sienna was rear ended by a semi going about 30 MPH faster than us on the high way and my older 2 boys were in RFing seats in the 3rd with seatbelts :)

As long as the seat is properly installed, using a seatbelt as your installation method is not any safer than using the lower anchors of the LATCH system as your installation method. It may be easier for some to install using the lower anchors, but, in fact, many times, you may actually get a better install using a seatbelt.

I would be especially un-concerned using a seatbelt for a rear-facing child seat (since there's no need to top tether a RFing seat).

As long as you've got at least 80% of the child seat base in contact with the vehicle seat bottom (which should be no issues at all in the 3rd row of a Sienna) and the child seat moves 1" or less at the BELT PATH ONLY side-to-side and back-to-back, your installation is acceptable. Add that in with your child seat being rear-facing and that your child will be strapped in and positioned properly and you've got a kid who's as safe as they can possibly be in any given situation.
