2 of our 3 cars are older cars with only lap belts. Now that our son is using a booster, he has no sholder belt. Are there any booster seats for older cars?

Have you checked into getting a shoulder belt retrofit? You can see if your vehicles can have them installed here: http://www.carseat.org/Technical/640_RetroSB.pdf . That would be the first and best option to try.

As for retro fitting, they didn't have anything listed for a 56 Chevy, but they did the 83 Caddy.
