Shoulder belt but not lap belt?

So, I was at BRU today, and ended up "working" the car seat department for about an hour and a half ;) ;) . The associate (actually, I think she was some sort of supervisor, she had a title under her name badge) asked me to 'assist' her in talking with a customer (I'm in there a lot, she knows I'm a CPS freak).

Apparently, the mom has a car (didn't drive it today, so I couldn't see it) that has shoulder belts in the back, but not lap belts? Meaning, it starts at the shoulder, and buckles at the hip, but nothing goes from hip to hip - in talking, the husband asserted that maybe he was confused, and it does have lap belts after all - but I wanted to check and make sure.

P.S., she said it was a '95 Geo Metro.

Also, was I correct in saying that, if in fact it did only have the shoulder portions, that they could NOT install a CRS in there? These are in the outboard positions, the middle has a lap only belt (so one could be installed there, but no where else in the car).

That sounds wacky. But yes, I think you said the right thing.

I hope they were just confused and they do have lap-shoulder belts!

If it has a shoulder belt it will have a lap belt. It could be like the some of the vehicles where the shoulder belt one of those that is on the door seal that routes forward and back automatically when the door opens but then you must buckle the lap portion. But, I have never seen these on the rear positions in sedans. I know they were big in Acura's back in the early '90. My mom had a '93 Interga coupe that had them but only in the front seats.

Okay I went to look on Ebay for a '05 Geo Metro. Here is a picture of the back seat. You can see it has l/s belts and it to be no center belt. This is on a 4dr sedan. I will see if they have a coupe verison but I think it will be the exact same.

Here is a '94 coupe. This is the best picture I could find. As you can see again it has l/s belts and all of them I have looked at do not have a center seatbelt.

Too awesome Jenny - I was searching ebay too but didn't have the success you did.

I'm pretty sure they were incorrect, but I wanted to double check. The only thing I could think of that had no lap were those ones that went with the door (the ones on the track), and they wouldn't be in the back seat. I feel a little better now

Even those that are on the door track do have lapbelts but you have to buckle them where the shoulder portions is automatic. And, I too have never seen them in the rear seat on a sedan. I think some trucks had them in the rear but I haven't come across one yet.

It sounds like these folks were just confused about their seatbelts since the shoulder pulls down and becomes the lap and shoulder belt. Maybe they expected to need a more obvious lap portion?
