I know where straps go for rf and ff. I'm just curious the reason behind the difference. I've tried visioning crashes in my head and the way the force would take the kid etc, and I get all that. I'm just curious as to why the difference in strap placement. Thanks :)

In a frontal collision in a rearfacing seat, the child's body is going to continue towards the front of the car, which means their body is going to go up the car seat. With the straps at or below their shoulders, they won't be able to go very far. If the straps were above their shoulders, their body's would ride up the seat until they hit the straps, possibly causing injuries.

In a frontal collision in a forward facing seat, the body moves forward against the straps. With the straps above the shoulders, there isn't any slack and the body is stopped by the straps. With the straps below the shoulders, the length of the harness is longer and the child's body can move forward more. The straps below the shoulders can also pull the child's body down during a collision and make it so the child's body almost folds in half. This can cause the spine to compress.
