The driver's daughter two month old Daraji Brown and her eight year old nephew Tazia Gibbs were thrown from the car and died.

Troopers tell us none of the kids were properly restrained. Sunday night Shameeka is recovering from physical wounds in the hospital, but it's the mental ones that are going to take much longer to heal. If the losses of her baby and nephew aren't enough for Shameeka Brown to deal with, troopers tell us charges in the crash are pending against her.

Apparently a total of 4 children were thrown from the vehicle, including the two who died, there was a 13 year old and a 20 month old. :(

I think we all agree that a little 5 minute, or less, news snippet does not car seat education make. So armed with these last couple of news reports, and I'm 100% certain we could dig up more, shouldn't we contact 60-Minutes, 20/20, Anderson Cooper, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, etc. and try to get them to run a full half hour segment, or longer on car seat safety? Do segments on infants, toddlers, older kids, small adults, ERF, aftermarket devices (the evil Mighty Tite and non-approved seat covers, and of course car seat expiration.

I love the idea! The news usually only devotes just a few moments to the issue & the speakers (often SafeKids organization techs/instructors) feel too rushed to get all the information out there. Some solid recurring segments devoting to each stage would be fantastic.

I agree Wineaux. With all the "consumer advocate" type stories they do on 60 minutes et al, you would think that they would be interested in a CRS segment (or whole series! wouldn't that be awesome!)

I really think the "Paging Dr. Gupta" show that CNN has on the weekends would be the best venue. Dr. Gupta is a real Neurosurgeon, and I am certain he could not only talk intelligently about head and spinal compression injuries that improperly restrained children suffer, but would be taken very seriously by the public at large.

I'm going to pop over to the CNN website and see if I can't find an email link to the producer of his show...

OK, here's the link to the online contact form for his show:

I would say that's our starting point. Should we all submit identical letters asking for a show devoted entirely to CRS issues, or should we have a spokesperson and a digitally signed petition? We could also do tons of letters PLUS the petition as well.

We will most certainly need very knowledgeable people for the show to contact for more information. IMHO, they should all be CPST's, and I'd also suggest our board admins as well. For those folks we'll need email addresses and good phone numbers so the producers can contact them for info, etc. I'm not sure we want to put the phone numbers in the letter(s), but the email addresses, and this forum should be there for sure. I know for a fact that CNN producers DO make accounts on message boards like this to find people and info for their stories. They get your personal info via PM's, or have you email them.

So, what's next?

I'm all for "paging" Dr. Gupta. Um, he's hot

As for the story, I find that sometimes it just hurts my heart too much to read them :(

Make another thread, with what you are requesting,to bring attention to it. I love the idea of getting the word out, if we could get a show to CORRECTLY show car-seats and child passenger safety.

A digital petition would make us feel better, but it really won't accomplish anything. :(
