GULFPORT – The three children killed this morning in a single-vehicle crash were siblings, authorities said.
Harrison County Deputy Coroner Brian Switzer identified the three as Angel Zamora, 5, Chrystal Zamora, 6, and Dulce Zamora, 7. The three, who were riding in the Ford Econoline van unrestrained, died from blunt force trauma, he said. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver was airlifted to University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile in serious condition. Others in the van, including a pregnant woman, had minor to moderate injuries, said Gulfport police Sgt. Damon McDaniel.
Police believe the van was carrying 11 people from South Carolina to Mexico and blew a tire this morning on Interstate 10.
The accident happened about 2:30 a.m. in the westbound lane of I-10 just east of the Canal Road exit.
The passengers were members of three families, McDaniel said.
No one was wearing seat belts in the Ford Econoline, which is a cargo van without passenger seats in the back.
