A guy at dh's work told him...

...that he should remove our RF mirror because he heard they can injure kids in a crash. I am tickled pink that some random guy knows this. DH called me right up and told me.:p I explained to dh that yes his co-worker was correct but that both our mirror and Gavin's seat were tethered and that there was no way either one of them would come together in the event of a crash. I also told him that yes I do tell all the parents at work (I'm a tech at two hospitals) that they should not use mirrors. So I guess I'm a hypocrite.

I am a hypocryte as well.

But where did you get your tethered mirror. My car has no headrests and with two rearfacing anyday now, I'd really like to see the littlest one to insure he isn't get things thrown at him.

I believe I got it at Walmart for like $10-$12.

I got mine at BRU or WM. Don't remember which.

I have one for DD but not for DS. DD was unbuckling her chest clip, so I put it up to watch her. Long story short, she leaves the chest clip alone as long as she has the mirror but unbuckles if I take the mirror down, so she has a mirror. I don't have an excellent reason to have one for DS, so I don't.

I have a mirror. And I'm ok with it. Physics states it'll be about 37 pounds of force in a 60 mph crash. It cannot be fatal short of a freak accident. It's a lightweight padded mirror. So I'm fine with it.

A mirror with a battery pack, though, I wouldn't be. I could see a battery pack at full force breaking a skull.

I have mirrors for my kids in my van ware I can put them on the headrest but not in DH's car I think they would be harder to attach in the car

Another hypocrite here.

I also have the tethered one. I got mine at Marshall's for under $10. I won't use one that has electronics in it because the extra weight makes me very nervous.

I just bought another tethered mirror at BRU over the weekend. The brand is Brinka. It is this one:

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11128661

It also comes in brown. I see from the description that it is the same mirror once sold under the "Safe Fit" brand, which is the one I had before. I'm okay with it since it can be tethered and I have to be able to see the kids. It would drive me nuts to have them RF and not be able to see them!

I use one off and on--when the kid found out he could get out of the MT buckle it came back, then we worked on that and it went back in the trunk, but... It broke in the trunk. And it's SHARP! But it's just in two pieces and the edges are well contained, so i think if it broke in a crash that wouldn't be the worst problem. I'll buy a new one if I need one again.

So yeah, another happily RF 'hypocrite' here.

I have them too (3 actually)... the kids want to watch the movies on the built in DVD player. It is basically made of cardboard with padding and it attaches to itself around the headboard so its not going anywhere unless the headrest does so I'm ok with it. I tell parents not to use them though.

Yup, have one as well. Not only is mine tethered, it's also wedged under the headrest... so, like Julia said, it's not going anywhere unless the headrest goes somewhere (which is unlikely since it's latched into place.) I warn parents, but tell them it's their decision.

I have a padded, lightweight, tethered one for my squirrely rear-facer who has recently learned how to undo his chest clip.
I'm always surprised at how many parents seem to think the mirror is solely for the child to see him/herself. I noticed this when my kids were in day care and their classmates would get turned ff (at 1/20 or thereabouts), the mirror would turn with them and end up on the back of the front seat's headrest.

I have seen the straps on those deteriorate and fall apart when I pulled gently.

A good reminder to check the condition and integrity of any accessories (as well as the car seat itself) on a regular basis. :)
