Turning for good, today

2y10m, 36 pounds. I'm turning him around. Not because he's outgrown it, not because it's too hard, not because I'm bored.
But he WON'T STOP UNBUCKLING.
We can't stop him, because we can't SEE it. And he's still too young to really reason with. He doesn't do it (or, well, he hasn't yet done it) FF (he's been FF in another vehicle for about 2 months).

I would have liked him to make it longer (with a MR, XTSL, and soon a CA, he could have made it another year), but he's light years safer FF than RF unbuckled. It's happened too many times now.

Oh well, maybe the next baby will make it to three.

Colton keeps pushing his chest clip down all the way to the crotch buckle. Its making me crazy! And I totally get being bored. I have been thinking DAILY about turning Colton FF. He tells me every time I put him in the car that he wants to see me.

You are right. Your kiddo is definitely 1000% safer FF buckled vs RF unbuckled. Is he undoing the crotch buckle and chest clip? I see you are ghetting a CA. The chest clip on it is a ***** to unbuckle! The crotch buckle is a little harder too because the button is smaller than most.

2 years and 10 months is still a huge accomplishment! I would turn him and not sweat it. He'll still be very safe in a properly installed and used forward facing seat.

We do what we have to do. I'm in a similar situation (posted about it yesterday) with DS. He just turned three and is 35lbs in a 40lb RF seat. He completely loosened his harness yesterday and scared the crap out of me. :( Right now (as of this morning), his seat is FF in the van, and I may not turn him back even though I technically can for a few more pounds. I'm just too worried about him doing that again while I drive.

Sorry... I really didn't mean to make this an all-about-me thing. Just wanted to commiserate. Boys.

He's undoing the chest clip and pulling his arms out. He does it in EVERY seat we own (GN, FN, G2, XTSL, MR) but when FF he only does it once we stop the car and get out. RF, he does it... who knows when. He can't undo the bottom, he's just undoing the top and sliding his arms out.

I put a RF mirror in so I could catch DD in the act. And she quit unbuckling. Took the mirror out, she unbuckled again. So the mirror is in. She's safer RFing with a mirror than FFing.

Have you tried any of the usual tricks? Prickly velcro? Button-down shirt over the harness?

The best thing is to not be distracted and driving worried about him being undone.. So I would do exactly the same thing. Little buggers....

I also have the CA and is really hard to unbuckle, even my niece ho is 6 can't do it!

I wouldn't be surprised if I'm in the same position in a couple of years with my LO. She isn't even 13 months yet and she's already undone her chest clip once; fortunately, since I do have a mirror, I caught her in the act. I put up the mirror because she'd started playing with the chest clip and I knew it was only a matter of time before she'd figure it out. So far she doesn't know how to repeat it, but she keeps trying. Right now I think she just likes the feeling and sound of "twanging" the chest buckle with her fingers, and actually getting it open was a fluke.

Anyway, don't feel bad. 2 years 10 months is good. I'd like to keep DD rear-facing longer than that, but some kids just are tougher than others. I agree with PP that a mirror RFing is safer than FFing, but not all vehicles have a good place to put one, and I can see how it might not solve the problem for all children also.
