Britax HUGS

I know I go against the grain around here by not liking Britax seats, but I just don't. I guess the main thing I don't like is the harness. I heard from another site that the reason Britax came up with HUGS is actually because their seats didn't pass inspection due to the harness straps being too narrow. They put HUGS on them rather than remaking the seats to accommodate wider straps. Has anyone here ever heard this?

One Britax seat, the Elite or Super Elite, an 80 pound seat, did not pass head excursion testing without the HUGS. After that they started using HUGS on all their higher weight limit seats. Those seats did not fail anything. :)

The HUGS are to reduce head excursion (they actually resemble the comfort pads on European seats, which aren't comfort pads ONLY; they are rubberized on the back to grip the child's body during a crash) and to distribute forces better.

There was trouble with ONE seat passing inspection. That seat is no longer manufactured. HUGS are merely an added safety feature.

From what I know, it's cause a certain seat didn't meet federal requirements for head excursion, hence why they put the hugs on. I think they do pass now without the hugs (emphasis on the THINK) but they still put them on them.

The manual (I think Marathon) says you can use it RF without HUGS, but HUGS must be used FF.Thanks for info. What I heard didn't state that it was only certain models.

Yup, and the Roundabout doesn't have HUGS at all. It's still fine to use the Roundabout FF without the HUGS. I'm guessing because it only goes to 40lbs, t hough, unlike the MA and other Britax seats.
